In the past days some of the most widely renown brands had to apologize to China for mistakenly considering Hong Kong independent instead of under the China government.
Being this not enough “Chinese customers” revolted against the fact that Givenchy and Coach considered Taipei as part of the state of Taiwan while China has never ceased to claim that Taiwan was part of its own state.
The fear of losing such a crucial business partner (as it happened to D&G) was so high that they promptly apologized and Givenchy also stated that it “always respects Chinese sovereignty”.
The feeling around this matter, seen from an helicopter view, is quite disturbing.
On one side there might be mistakes made by employees in the fashion brands, on the other side the perception is that fashion shouldn’t be taken so seriously by anyone.
